Deep retrofit using Passivhaus principles
Kendal, Cumbria
Due to start on site in 2023

This existing modest bungalow is to be transformed into a modern, sustainable home – an example of making the ordinary extraordinary.

The client’s brief is to take an ordinary 1970s bungalow located on the edge of the Lake District National Park and turn it into an extraordinary, energy efficient and beautiful home. The ‘deep retrofit’ of the bungalow adopts all the Passivhaus principles and takes a fabric first approach. The house will be super insulated with significantly improved air tightness, new triple glazed windows and a MVHR system.

The value an architect brings to design… you can really see how Russel’s architectural expertise has transformed my initial thoughts into a layout that works significantly better. With Russel’s architectural input - the scheme has evolved to something far more refined (and more efficient!) than my initial thoughts.
